This image is called Let Him Go! It’s part of my Green Girl images done in collaboration with poet Mary Jo Amani for her book Green Girl Weaving. It goes with the following poem:
Between the Pause and the Letting Go
The soapy plate casts a shadow on a cricket
on the back of the sink
where the caulking turns
dark with mold,
and the cricket leaps, in that short,
impulsive way some children do.
I slap the cricket.
I think of my son who shot himself.
“What did I do?”
“Open your hands, let him go,”
green girl says.
The cricket unfurls
its legs, jumps
onto the blue-tiled floor.
“I thought he was dead!”
“Don’t think so much,”
says green girl.
I enjoyed drawing the bubbles on this one they were a delicate challenge in waterolor. Leaving the white while also pushing the dark behind was careful work.
The card will come with the poem it is based on printed on the back, and will be blank inside waiting for your message.
