This image is called You Can Float. It’s part of my Green Girl images done in collaboration with poet Mary Jo Amani for her book Green Girl Weaving. It goes with the following poem:
Home
I find myself
lost in the woods, see
lights in the cottage ahead.
Entering the house,
I find a river for a floor,
sweet rushes wrapping
round a wooden table,
minnows darting between chairs,
a watery bed of fallen leaves.
“I thought I was home,” I say,
but I’m Jonah at sea. I need a boat.”
“You are home,” says green girl.
“But I can’t swim forever,” I say.
“Stretch yourself out,” she says.
“You can float.”
The peace of floating in water is what I wanted to express in this piece. To connect to the poetic imagery, I decided to use the pattern of a wooden floor to allude to being in a home.
The card will come with the poem it is based on printed on the back, and will be blank inside waiting for your message.
